Merry Christmas!

Mon 12/22: Off. Tired from long run yesterday.

Sun 12/14: Ran ~40min, ~5mi, to Mission College, Calabazas Creek Trail to Tasman, then down the stairs and back home.

Lazy

Having visitors (along with being lazy) the last few weeks made it very difficult to keep my mileage up... I still ran and did crossfit! But didn't run enough.

Mon 12/1: Easy ~25min before work. Standup time now in the afternoon so I can get to work late xD.

Tue 12/2: Crossfit (in the gym again since it was raining), triceps sore after.

Wed 12/3: Easy ~25min before work.

Thu 12/4: Crossfit in the gym again, took it a bit easier.

Fri 12/5: Basketball.

Sat 12/6: Easy ~25min. IEM San Jose League of Legends Tournament!

Sun 12/7: Off, more watching league. Unicorns of Love lost :(.

Sunday, November 16, 2014

Mon 11/10: ~3mi after work.

Tue 11/11: Crossfit. Not sore at all for once, success!

Wed 11/12: Ran around shoreline lake, ~5mi.

Thu 11/13: Crossfit. Had a pretty hard tricep and chest day.

Fri 11/14: Played some basketball, not too hard.

Sat 11/15: To Bowers park and back, ~50 min. Picked it up at the end.

11/3-11/9: Mostly back to normal routine, hamstrings pretty sore for part of the week though. Lots of moving boxes and finished cleaning out apartment.

Thu 11/6: Crossfit, killing it every time. Bring your parents day = cafeteria way too crowded.

Fri 11/7: Basketball, played some 5v5 and 3v3. Alec hurt his knee pretty bad :(.

Sat 11/8: Spent most of the afternoon cleaning, got everything but the kitchen.

Sun 11/9: Finished cleaning apartment. Last visit. Went on a pretty ridiculous late night run. ~55min, to twin peaks and back.

10/27-11/2: Busy busy moving, and Atan's birthday! First ayce kbbq and karaoke in bay area!

Sat 10/25: 43min, ran around Ulstad park. ~5.3mi. Hamstrings a bit sore after.

Such pain

Tue 10/14: CrossFit, has a massive leg day. 112 squats (weight/jumps), lots of burpees, sprinting, etc. Surprisingly felt ok after, but groin and hip flexor in lots of pain during the evening / the next day.

Wed 10/15: Ran 34min, to 237 and back, 4.5mi. Thought I could run through the groin/hip flexor pain but it felt a lot worse afterwards... I guess not.

Thu 10/16: CrossFit. Legs still hurt so did upper body stuff.

Fri 10/17: InDay! LinkedIn goes pink 2mi walk. Got two free shirts! Played a lot of basketball.

Sat 10/18: Off, moved all my boxes to the new house!

Sun 10/19: 5.1mi, to McCarthy and back. Legs finally healthy.

Start of track season

Look at that, it's been 2 weeks since the alumni race. The track all-comers and Oxy distance are both within 6 months from now, so might as well start offseason track now.

Mon 10/6: 29min, 3.8mi on Bay Trail.

Tue 10/7: CrossFit. I think I went a bit too easy today haha.

Wed 10/8: 2.7mi easy.

Thu 10/9: CrossFit, felt pretty good.

Fri 10/10: Basketball for like an hour and then half an hour of biking to El Camino and back, ~7.2mi.

Sat 10/11: Ran on Steven's Creek trail to 237 and back, 4.5mi, 34min.

Sun 10/12: Did some lifting, stationary bike/treadmilled a bit. Tried to do shoulder press with my lower back against the seat, had to lower weight down to 15 and it still was hurting my lower back. I need to figure out if I need to adjust my posture/form or strengthen my abs/lower back.

Unexpected break

Mon 9/29: ~2mi easy. Did chest/shoulder with Shawn, pretty sore afterwards.

Tue 9/30: First time at crossfit! Did lots of burpees and line sprints. Went a little too hard in the beginning. Chest still a bit sore and groin sore afterwards.

Wed 10/1: Happy birthday Robert!

Thu 10/2: Crossfit! Felt better today, was afraid groin would hurt but ended up being ok. This time had 100m sprints, which obviously makes me happy. Shoulders are really weak.

Fri 10/3: Played a lot of basketball, and then dinner and movie with the team. :D

Sat 10/4: Stanford/Palantir puzzle hunt! We did pretty well in my opinion, just a few questions were badly phrased haha. Not actually but clearlyyy it wasn't our fault. 2.7mi easy.

Sun 10/5: DDR! Got to play 2 extra stages! This E-Amusement pass is awesome.

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

Too hard

Mon 9/22: I think I killed my legs last weekend... I feel like I can't move... groin/hamstring/glutes in such pain. Tried and could barely bike/run.

Wed 9/24: ~2mi easy.

Fri 9/26: ~2mi easy.

Sat 9/27: ~3mi easy.

Sun 9/28: DDR! First time playing at golfland, was super fun.

Alumni Power

Mon 9/15: 2x2.2mi tempo going with 2 min rest (aka going every 15). Ran 13 (split 6:30) then 12:40 (split 6:20), second one in spikes, goal was to stay in control while maintaining a fast (near race) pace. Put a lot of focus on form, especially since it was my first time wearing spikes since track. The first one felt really good/pretty easy. It was pretty shocking being in spikes at the start of the second one, felt really fast in comparison and definitely sped up a bit. Still felt in control in the second one, but had to push the last half mile a lot harder to keep pace. Felt really bad afterwards, probably because I had such a long (30min) warm up and had to rush to dinner (12min cool down). Legs were really really sore at night, stomach was uncomfortable, and was a bit nauseated. Hopefully I'll feel better tomorrow, definitely going to take an easy recovery day. ~9.5mi total.

Tue 9/16: Went really easy since legs were sore from yesterday's workout, ~5mi.

Wed 9/17: Off, left my shorts at home.

Thu 9/18: AM: ~5mi, legs were feeling pretty bad. Was gonna do a fartlek, but just wasn't feeling it, so only did a few speed-ups.
PM: Did some stationary bike/core/upper body

Fri 9/19: AM: Easy 20min with a few strides, 2.5mi.
PM: Drove 6 hours... back at Caltech!

Sat 9/20: Alumni Race! Turns out the current athletes were doing a 5on/2off fartlek instead of the race, so pretty much had to race alone. Was still fun though, went out way too hard the first lap (shouldn't have kept up with Gus). Splits ~8:47, 9:30, 9:30. 27:47 is decent, but 2 sec off from my pr. Eric and I passed each other a few times throughout, but didn't manage to catch him on his final rest. Ane and Jared were decently close (probably were going a bit faster than me during the on), and went fast through their final rest trying to catch me haha. ~10mi.

Sun 9/21: Lifted with the team. Then drove back up to the bay area.

Ambition injures the cat

Mon 9/8: Easy 56min, ~7.5mi. Ran into Eric's roommate on Steven's creek trail. Amazingly, achilles were feeling a lot better. Maybe it's the shoes.
New shoes arrived!

Tue 9/9: 4x1.1mi repeats again on Steven's Creek trail, going every 10 min. Killed it running 6:05, 6:10, 6:06, 6:00. Yes that's 20 sec per interval faster than 4 weeks ago, suck it. Eric averaged 10 sec faster per interval, so not that far behind. Felt pretty amazing. Definitely hurt, but what else are you supposed to expect. ~20min warmup and ~12min cooldown so 8.5mi total. My L hip flexor felt really funny during the warmup, but luckily that went away.

Wed 9/10: Legs really tired in general, and hamstrings sore. Kind of hurt in the beginning, but thankfully loosened up. ~6.5mi. First run in the new shoes! So awesome and pretty :D.

Thu 9/11: Amphitheatre hills again! 68, 67, 66, 65, 66, 65. Last time averaged 68, so this time was a lot better, plus it was windier so probably a harder workout. (For context, Eric averaged barely slower this time than last.) Really solid effort, legs were dying at the end of the last 3. Especially on the last one, felt like my legs were giving out at the end. ~6.5mi.

Fri 9/12: Extended lake loop again, pretty much the same run as Wed, legs pretty tired. ~48min, ~6.5mi.

Sat 9/13: For some reason, legs weren't particularly tired, but they didn't feel great either for the first half. Kept trying to slow down the pace at first because it was gonna be a long run and I didn't think I could hold the pace, but after half way through felt way better and definitely sped up a bit. Ran down Bernardo/Mary to Steven's Creek Blvd and then back up Mary. 69min, ~9.7mi. Really was hoping it was 10 miles, but not quite...

Sun 9/14: A bit of easy lifting.

Total: 45.2mi.

Monday, September 1, 2014

Wait it's already September?

I just realized... there's less than 3 weeks until the alumni race. That's super exciting, but on the other hand, it seems like just a while back I had 9 weeks. Time flies when you're running fast ;P.

Mon 9/1: Ran with Stan to Menlo park and back. 75min, ~10mi. At least I think we were going 7:30 pace. Felt fast.

Tue 9/2: 20 minute tempo, splits were around 6:20, 12:50, 18, around 5:50 pace. Apparently these were like 5sec slower than Diddy and Eric's splits on their previous tempo. Good to know my 20 minute pace is almost as fast as their 28 minute pace... Felt like I was going pretty fast, and definitely was pushing it the whole time. Stomach felt a bit funny, maybe my abs are a bit sore. ~7mi total.

Wed 9/3: ~7mi, 50min, a bit faster than usual but felt pretty good.

Thu 9/4: 1on 1off fartlek by 12. 19 minute warm up, 15 minute cool down. Legs were really tired even before the workout (maybe shouldn't have pushed yesterday as much). Felt pretty bad, but stuck with it and managed to run decently fast. Pretty sore afterwards. Definitely going to take the next few days a little easier. I'm really happy with my quality of training the last two weeks, been making some really good improvements. Gotta be careful though because after today's workout, both knees were hurting a bit and my soleus sometimes hurts a bit while running too.  60min, ~8mi.
Also, got new shoes! I feel like both my shoes have 300+ miles on them so definitely time to get a new on in the rotation. Unfortunately, there are no more Ravenna 4's in my size, so I had to get a more expensive Ravenna 5.

Fri 9/5: 45min, ~6mi. Felt way harder than it should have. Legs are not happy, right hip was hurting a bit. Most likely crosstraining over the weekend.

Sat 9/6: Off.

Sun 9/7: Ran really easy 52min, ~6.5mi on Coyote Creek trail. For some reasons achilles were hurting a lot.

Total: 44.5mi.

Tuesday, August 26, 2014

2 workouts a week

Mon 8/25: ~7mi, to North end of Stevens creek . Did some strides after. Had pretty bad shin splints, esp on the left side. Foot was burned really badly during kayaking so maybe that changed my form...

Tue 8/26: Hill repeats. 69, 69, 68, 67, 68, 67. Felt pretty good, wasn't killing it at first but definitely got a lot tougher by the end. ~7mi total.

Wed 8/27: ~7mi again, same as Monday except went out on Bay trail instead. Shin splints for first half of run again.

Thu 8/28: Justus joined Diddy, Eric, and me today! Did 3 minute pick ups every 10min, 4 times. Basically went at 16, 26, 36, 46. Was 68 min total because ran extra with Justus at the end, gonna guess ~9mi.

Fri 8/29: ~7mi again, ran to the Ames research center.

Sat 8/30: Ran with Eric and David in the morning, slower than usual (which was nice!) ~7mi, like 54min. Started in Palo Alto Baylands Park and ended up running on the same trail we usually go on haha.

Sun 8/31: Swam a bit and did some upper body work.

Total: 44mi.
Mon 8/18: ~8mi, 60min. Been having this slight pain in my achilles, so rolling out a bunch every day. IT bands are feeling better though, so that's good.

Tue 8/19: 28min tempo. Splits were ~6:40, 13:40, 18:50, 24. ~6:10 pace. ~8.5mi total.

Wed 8/20: ~8mi, 60min. Shins starting to hurt a bit. So sore, probably a bit fast for recovery. Ohh well, the rest of the week will be really easy.

Thu 8/21: AM: 20min, 2.5mi run. Then camping trip!

Fri 8/22: ~30min, 3.8mi.

Sat 8/23: Amy visited! Off, but walked like ton in SF.

Sun 8/24: Off, but went kayaking so kind of an upper body workout...

Total: 30.8mi.

Tuesday, August 12, 2014

Mon 8/11: Coyote, 237, First back, 52min. ~6.5mi.

Tue 8/12: 64min on Bay Trail. ~8mi. First time doing strides!

Wed 8/13: 45min with Eric and Diddy, ~6.3mi. Pretty dang fast. More strides.

Thu 8/14: ~1.1mile intervals with Eric and Diddy. 6:28, 6:34, 6:17, 6:23. Really happy with that, especially since it's my first workout since track! ~7mi total.

Fri 8/15: Played like an hour of bball.

Sat 8/16: ~12mi, 90min in San Antonio Open Space Preserve! Was gonna run up the hiking trail, but was too steep so ran in more flat area instead. Was definitely a good decision.

Sun 8/17: Off.

Total: 39.8mi.
Sun 8/3: 73min, to end of Coyote creek. ~9mi.

Mon 8/4: First day of work! Off.

Tue 8/5: Coyote creek to 237. ~6mi.

Wed 8/6: Off.

Thu 8/7: Coyote creek to 237 again? ~6mi.

Fri 8/8: Off.

Sat 8/9: 48 min, Coyote creek, a bit on 237. ~6mi.

Sun 8/10: 80min, Guadalupe river trail and exploring, ~10mi.

Total: 37mi.

Sunday, July 27, 2014

Sat 7/26: Beach! Off.

Sun 7/27: Lacy long way plus a bit with Dennis, 4.6mi.
PM: DDR with Laura, passed Power Rangers! Basically trying to be as efficient as possible on the Omega ITGX pads.

Mon 7/28: Lower Arroyo, 7.8mi with Dennis. Didn't do full because a little sore from DDR the previous night.

Tue 7/29: Water Tower, 8.7mi. Went pretty fast.

Wed 7/30: Drove up to the bay area, off.

Thu 7/31: Ran on Guadalupe River Trail, ~5mi.

Fri 8/1: Ran on Coyote Creek Trail, ~5mi.

Sat 8/2: Long run with Stan at Stanford, went to the Pearson-Arastradero Preserve. ~9.5mi. Went too fast... legs so tired.

Total: 40.6mi.

Sunday, July 20, 2014

9 weeks

Fri 7/18: BLP, 6.6mi. Maybe I'm not ready for this kind of mileage yet. So slow.

Sat 7/19: One small and one big neighborhood loop, 3.5mi. Also went raspberry picking in the morning! So yummy.

Sun 7/20: BLP again, 6.6mi. It felt a lot easier this time. I feel like my legs are getting stronger. Also went hiking very briefly (like 45 minutes) in the morning.

Mon 7/21: Ran to Pine Lake Park and then swam/chilled in the water (except not actually since it was really warm!) a bunch. ~2.8mi plus 0.5mi swimming.

Tue 7/22: Woohoo, rocked today's run! Ran to Lake Sammamish State Park and explored a bunch, ~11mi, 88min. The route is just a rough sketch, considering I went exploring in quite a few dead ends. Felt awesome the whole time, even the constant uphill in the last 2 miles had nothing on me. The whole time I was like wow I feel good, I feel fast, I wonder if I can keep this up for the rest of the run... maybe I should slow down... but nope managed to keep it up. Good last day in Sammamish before leaving back to California. Ready to start working soon!

Wed 7/23: Back at tech! Upper with Joel, 6.7mi.

Thu 7/24: Lifted with Jeffrey, pretty sore.

Fri 7/25: DDR and CTF.

Total: 37.2mi plus lots of random exercise.

Monday, July 14, 2014

It's been a while

Sat 7/12: Back from China! Really out of shape, considering I only ran like 3 times in 3 weeks. We walked a lot and went up a ton of stairs, but it's really not the same.
Ran with Robert to BLP, and then coming back went by BLMS. 5.8mi, 52 min, since we really slowed down, especially coming up the last hill. It was probably a bit much for me, and I'll probably be a bit sore, but no big deal.

Sun 7/13: Had to take a recovery day. 2mi, 1 small loop and went through the neighborhood park.

Mon 7/14: Yellow lake coming around from the long side. Some of the trails are no longer being maintained, which makes me sad... had to walk through a dense shrubby section. ~3.5mi.
Places that feel funny: groins and IT bands. Gonna start doing all those exercises again. Particularly worried about my L IT band...

Tue 7/15: 1 small loop, 1.8mi.

Wed-Thu: Off because hanging out with James/Dan/Eddie before Internationals.

Total: 13.1mi.

Tuesday, April 29, 2014

FINALLYYYY

Mon 4/28: Upper, 6mi. We all went really slow, tuning up for SCIACs. Thankfully groin didn't hurt too much.

Tue 4/29: 2 x 6 x 200m, first 3 in every set at 15, second 3 at 800 pace. Ran 34, 33, 34, 30, 32, 32, 34, 34, 34, 32, 31, 30. Felt surprisingly out of breath, but otherwise not too bad at all, despite not sleeping much. ~6mi.

Wed 4/30: Easy recovery, Huntington up Virginia, 5mi.

Thu 5/1: Prerace, 3.4mi.

Fri 5/2: PR IN THE 1500! 4:24.02!!!!! YEAAAAAAA! Split 69, 69, 72, 54 (bad last 300...) so 69, 2:18, 3:30, 4:24.02.

Sat 5/3: PR IN THE 5k! 16:49.50!!!!! YEAAAAAAA! Went out really fast and it felt really good, like 5:08 first mile. Slowed down quite a bit laps 7-10, but managed to finish in ~80s so got a pretty good time.

Peace out guys time to chillax (aka DDR, basketball, floor hockey, and 1-4 mile runs at 9 minute pace) for the next few months.

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Mon 4/21: Lower, 7.8mi. Went really easy at the start until I loosened up, but still was difficult to keep up afterwards.

Tue 4/22: 2 x 600, 400, 300, 200 going every 4:30, 2:30, 2, 2. Was supposed to be at 1500 pace, ran 1:44, 68, 52, 32, 1:42, 68, 53, 33. That adds up to 4:16 on each 1500, which is pretty spectacular... ~6mi.

Wed 4/23: Garfield long way, 5.7mi. R calf was hurting the whole run and L hip flexor was hurting during strides for some reason...

Thu 4/24: 2 x 400, 400, 400, 300. Basically ran behind Fabian on all of them and then finished next to him. Was supposed to be like 2 sec faster than 1500 pace 69, 67, 68, 51, 67, 66, 67, 47. ~6mi.

Fri 4/25: Lacy long way, had to leave early for LA Phil concert. 4mi. Groin was hurting really bad.

Sat 4/26: Groin still hurting so ran warm up, cool down and biked 10 min. ~3.5mi.

Total: 33mi.

Tuesday, April 15, 2014

On the verge of injury

Mon 4/14: Lower, 7.8mi. Felt really bad so ran really slow, around 61min.

Tue 4/15: 4 x 2 x 400m at 800m race pace. I seem this an impossible workout if you go every 2 minutes within each set. Ran 66, 68, 68, 73, 72, 76, 73, 74. Yes, I know it's slower than 1500 pace. I feel horrible. And my hamstrings which were only sore before are feeling like they're being injured. ~6mi.

Wed 4/16: Tu madre but turned back early the street after San Gabriel. ~4.5mi, 39min. Ran really really slow bc legs were feeling really bad. Felt like I couldn't go faster without hurting myself... Got a really strong massage with this metal thing on my hamstrings and calves afterwards, I think it helped.

Thu 4/17: 3 x 300, 300, 200 going every 2min with 5 between sets. Ran 51, 50, 31, 49, 50, 32, 49, 49, 31, which adds up to 2:12, 2:11, 2:09 for the 800s. Goal was 1500 to (hopefully) 800 pace, so I think I did ok. Hamstrings were pretty uncomfortable but manageable. ~6.5mi.

Fri 4/18: Prerace, 3.4mi. Prefrosh ran with us!

Sat 4/19: Just ran the 800 since Scott wanted to be a bit conservative with me. Pretty decent, split 63 high for a 2:09 high final time. Pretty far off the pr, but it's my best time at Caltech! A lap in, it felt like I wouldn't be able to hold the pace, but I  pushed it and thankfully managed to hold it until the end. ~5mi total.

Sat 4/20: Lifted, did all three presses and probably went a bit hard in the beginning. Flat was fine, but then I was really tired for incline and decline was pretty horrible too.

Total: 33.2mi.

Monday, April 7, 2014

Do work

Mon 4/7: Lower, 7.8mi. Went pretty easy, but legs felt really stiff the last few miles, especially after stopping at light.

Tue 4/8: 2x5x300m every 2 min, so basically Saturday's workout with less rest and more reps. Needless to say, ran quite a bit slower. 53, 52, 51, 52, 52, 50, 51, 52, 51, 50. Bonus on 63 afterwards. 51.4 avg per 300, so that's clearly not 1500 pace. ~6.5mi.

Wed 4/9: Huntington, went really easy, 47min, 6mi.

Thu 4/10: 2x5x200m every 2 minutes. Theoretically 800m pace, but more like almost all-out every time o_O. 30, 30, 31, 31, 30, 31, 31, 30, 31, 30. Kinda sore from Tuesday still. ~6mi.

Fri 4/11: Prerace, 3.4mi. Probably even more sore today...

Sat 4/12: Pomona-pitzer invitational 1500m. Ran something like 69, 72, 74, 55. Goal was to run 70s, but that clearly didn't happen. It's not like I felt particularly bad in the last 2 laps, but the kick just wasn't there at all. Pretty disappointed, but I guess I can (kind of?) blame it on the soreness. ~5.5mi.

Total: 35.2mi.

Middle distance here we come

So if the title isn't obvious enough, I'm thinking about switching to middle distance. Now I know that I'm really lacking speed, but hey there's still a month to work on that. All I know is that my 5ks have all been going really badly, and despite doing very little speed work, my 1500s have been (relatively) better. Also, I don't think I could possibly get much better at the 5k this season having run at most 40 miles a week. In general, Scott's program is really suited much better towards middle distance, and I'm not sure if just throwing tempo miles in the beginning / end of a workout really helps for the 5k that much. Most likely running 1500 at PP, 800 and something else at next SCIAC, and 1500 and 5k at SCIAC champs.

Mon 3/31: Lower, 7.8mi. Taking it easy. Biceps / pecs a bit sore from yesterday.

Tue 4/1: 3 x (4 x 400), at around 1500 pace again. 73, 72, 72, 72, 71, 72, 73, 72, 72, 71, 73, 74. Totally thought I was gonna finish strong, and then just totally died at the end. I can never actually hit 1500 pace on these workouts, I blame lack of speed. 6.5mi.

Wed 4/2: Crazy tree! For once, the weather matched the run. 6mi.

Thu 4/3: 2 on 1 off x 7, plus 6 Pattons. ~8.5mi.
PM: DDR with Ayu in the sac.

Fri 4/4: 40 min, ~5mi.

Sat 4/5: 2 x 4 x 300m every 3 min. 49, 49, 50, 49, 48, 48, 47, 48. Fabian really killed it at the end. ~7mi.

Sun 4/6: Lifted with Will again!

Total: 40.8mi + DDR.
Mon 3/24: 5mi treadmill, 40min, 0.5 incline. Pretty boring stuff.

Tues 3/25: 600, 500, 400 x 3 at around 1500 pace. So hard... 1:45, 89, 72, 1:49, 90, 73, 1:50, 90, 72 or something like that. I shouldn't be this slow right now... kind of worrisome. Ohh well. 6.5mi total.

Wed 3/26: Garfield long way, 5.7mi.

Thu 3/27: Prerace, 3.4mi.

Fri 3/28: PCC meet, 1500 in 4:29... Ran something like 72, 74, 70, 53. Started sprinting with like 600 left and died at the end... totally thought I'd make it. Had really bad lung inflammation or something like that after finishing, couldn't really breathe. ~5mi. Not sure if it's asthma creeping back up or just residual sickness.

Sat 3/29: Worst 5k ever... Ran 17:38, plan was to run 82s and then totally died. ~7mi.

Sun 3/30: Lifted with Will.

Total: 32.6mi.

Wednesday, March 19, 2014

Mon 3/17: Casting pond, 8.5mi, went pretty easy but still was 7:30 pace.

Tue 3/18: 10 Kewens, 75, 74, 75, 73, 74, 75, 76, 76, 75, 71. ~9mi total. Hills are hard...

Wed 3/19: Ran Tu Madre backwards past San Gabriel and then turned around when got to the rest of the group. ~4.5mi.

Thu 3/20: On a plane all day, off. In Maryland!

Fri 3/21: 5 on 2 off by 3. ~8.5mi total. Nothing too remarkable. Don't know pace, but was probably somewhere around 5:20. Slightly uneven terrain.

Sat 3/22: Feeling really sick =/, off.

Sun 3/23: ~8.5mi again.

Total: 39mi.

Sunday, March 16, 2014

Mon 3/10: Lower, went pretty easy. 7.8mi.

Tue 3/11: 3x(600, 600, 300). Ran 1:50, 1:48, 52.5, 1:46, 1:49, 52.5 1:49, 1:47, 53. Felt pretty horrible again. Scott says I'm getting burnt out running Susan's workouts, so might do mid-distance stuff for a while. ~7mi total.

Wed 3/12: Garfield long way, 5.7mi.

Thu 3/13: Prerace, 3.4mi. Yay for easy week.

Fri 3/14: Happy Pi Day :). Occidental Distance Carnival! Pretty excited about my 1500 time of 4:28. Split 75, 73, 70, 50 (which converts to 67). I have no idea where that speed came from. It felt kind of funny for the first two laps, like I was wobbling. Got a bit trapped so the first two laps were really slow. Felt really good the last 2 laps though and pretty much killed it. ~7mi total.

Sat 3/15: Waterfall run! Super fun! ~8mi total.

Sun 3/16: Light lifting.

Total: 38.9mi.

Friday, March 7, 2014

Mon 3/3: Lower, went much slower this time. 7.8mi.

Tue 3/4: 2x4x400 going every 2 min, and then 1600 tempo at 5k pace. Ran 72, 72, 71, 72, 70, 71, 73, 71 aka 71.5 average, and then 5:19 mile (80, 79, 81, 79). ~7mi total.

Wed 3/5: Huntington, 6mi.

Thu 3/6: 2on, 1off by 7. Will had a lab, so ran by myself. Felt pretty bad... Ended up like 200m behind the rest of them. Felt good in the mile bonus though, ran 2:38 then 2:30 for a 5:08 mile. I guess Juan and I kind of kicked at the end... ~8.5mi total.

Fri 3/7: Prerace, 3.4mi.

Sat 3/8: 17:20 5k... Felt so horrible. I don't want to do the 5k next week... ~7mi total.

Sun 3/9: Lifted.

Total: 39.7mi.

Thursday, March 6, 2014

Mon 2/24: Lower Arroyo, 7.8mi. Soleus started feeling better after resting over the weekend, but lower really made it hurt a lot. Ran really fast for some reason, around 7min pace. Doing easy exercises after practice every day b/c don't want to irritate it before the workout.

Tue 2/25: 1600 at 3k pace, then 8, 4, 3 by 2. Ran 5:14 (I think), then 2:24, 70, 50, 2:28, 70, 52. Pretty much died on the last set, especially on the 800. ~7mi. Soleus doesn't feel as bad for track stuff.

Wed 2/26: Crazy Tree, 6mi. Took it a bit easier, but soleus still hurting. Theory: going downhill makes it hurt the most. Uneven terrain (like rocks in the arroyo) also makes it hurt.

Thu 2/27: 4on, 1off by 4. Scott wanted it at 3k pace, no way that was gonna happy. Ran 2:43, 2:45, 2:45, 2:45 for the 800 splits. Ran with Will pretty much the whole time. Had a 1mi (2lap) bonus. Came through at 2:40, finished 5:20. Was supposed to be negative splits... ohh well. ~8.5mi.

Fri 2/28: Lacy long way, 4mi. Had lots of fun running in the rain, splashing Will and Mark the whole time.

Sat 3/1: Had not lots of fun running in the rain, doing a 15min tempo at the arroyo and then 12 45sec strides. Tempo was horrible, came through 1.5mi at 9:40. Did the first two strides in the Arroyo, the next 4 on the way back, and the last 6 on the track. Pace was around 36 sec for the 200 splits. ~11.5mi.
PM: Played a decent amount of easy DDR.

Total: 44.8mi + easy DDR.
46mi equivalent.

Monday, February 17, 2014

Mon 2/17: Casting Pond, 8.5mi. Ran with Aditya b/c Iggy ditched us =/. Legs feeling pretty tired. Also a bit tired from lifting yesterday.

Tue 2/18: 1600 at 5k pace, 300 jog, 600 at 3k pace, 200 jog, 400 a bit faster, 400 jog, 1600 all out, decent rest, 400 all out. 5:20, 77 pace, 73, 5:08, 65 (caught up with Diddy). Felt pretty good. ~7.5mi total.

Wed 2/19: Garfield Long Way, 5.7mi. Probably went faster than I should have.

Thu 2/20: 4on, 2off by 4. Hit around 2:40, for the first 3 800 splits and then died on the last one. Skipped Pattons because blisters were really acting up, and soleus is starting to get injured. ~6mi.

Fri 2/21: Soleus is really bad. Can't really walk up/down stairs and feeling constant pain. Bike 30min.

Sat 2/22: 3k.
76, 79, 78, 79, 80, 81, 77, 36.
76, 2:35, 3:53, 5:12, 6:32, 7:53, 9:10, 9:46. Pr by two seconds, but still disappointed. Had to run a lot of outside of lane 1/ lane 2 for the first few laps in order to stay in position, and then got trapped behind some CMS guys in laps 4-6 so slowed down a lot even though I felt good. Tried to pass them a few times but realized it would've taken a lot more energy... ~6.5mi total.

Total: 34.2mi + 30min bike.
37.2mi equivalent.

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Mon 2/10: Lower Arroyo, 7.8mi. The protein bar returns :).

Tue 2/11: 4x1600 with 600m jog rest, went every 10min. 5:31, 5:26, 5:20, 5:22. Pretty happy with how it turned out. Was around 10sec behind Juan and Iggy for all of them. 9mi total. Thank goodness for Power Crunch Triple Chocolate protein bars with MICROPEPTIDES! After very close inspection, I found out that the new bars also have micropeptides, aka proteins that are broken down for better absorption! *This may not actually be scientifically accurate.
Also in case you didn't know, micropeptide/peptide is one of my coach's nicknames for me, because, you know, micro sounds like Michael.

Wed 2/12: Huntingson, 6.2mi. So sore from yesterday. Went ~7:30 pace. "I'm tired man, just tired."

Thu 2/13: Broken 3k workout. 500, 500, 1500, 500 all at 3k pace. Goal was 78s (9:45 3k). Ran pretty much right on, but it hurttt. It was supposed to be a pacing / not super hard workout... which kind of worries me. I'll just assume that I'll be much faster on Saturday. Definitely still feeling Tuesday's workout. ~6.5mi.

Fri 2/14: Happy Valentine's Day! Prerace, 3.4mi. Went to BJ's for dinner after practice, yum yum.

Sat 2/15: PP All-Comers. Ran 3k then mile. Felt pretty decent today. 3k splits were 79, 77, 78, 80, 81, 80, 79, 35, so came through 79, 2:36, 3:54, 5:14, 6:35, 7:55, 9:14, 9:49. Was only 1 second away from the 3k PR, so pretty satisfied. Race felt pretty painful from about 3 laps in until the finish, but that's pretty much to be expected. Surprised that I had that big kick in me, since I felt like I was already pushing it pretty hard with around 600 left. Possibly had the kick though because Santiago (the guy who ran with me in the 1500 last week) was trying to pass me, ended up holding him off by 0.09 sec.
Mile was horrible. Ran 75, 73, 75, 77, so 5:02 overall. Race went out really slow, got trapped, felt really bad the whole time.
~10mi total.

Total: 42.9mi.

Thursday, February 6, 2014

Mon 2/3: Feel amazing, hamstrings much better. Lower Arroyo, 7.8mi.

Tue 2/4: 4x1200m every 7min and then 400m. Ran 3:59, 3:59, 3:58, 3:56, 67. Ran with Iggy on the last 1200 and the 400, pretty solid workout. 7mi.

Wed 2/5: Huntington, 6mi. Calf hurting a bit through the day, first 2 mi of run.

Thu 2/6: 1200 then 2000, then 2 strides, all at around 5k pace. 4:00 then 6:33. Stuck with Juan and Iggy for the first ~3.5 laps. ~8mi.

Fri 2/7: Prerace, 3.4mi! Legs could really use an easy day...

Sat 2/8: First meet! Ran the 1500, 3k, and 4x4. Legs felt really tired before the 1500. Managed to bust out a semi-decent race though, came through at 73, 2:29, 3:43, 4:38 (so 73, 76, 74, 55-like 71). Probably saved a bit too much for the kick, but ohh well. It's a disappointing time, but I've haven't done anything this short in several years, so it'll get better I'm sure. The saddest part was that after the race, people came up to me and were like, "Did you PR too?". No... no... not even close. It's ok, sometimes it's nice when everybody has really low expectations for you because the only person you can disappoint is yourself.
Legs felt even more tired before the 3k. Was cold and tight the whole race, ran really slow. Something like 82, 83, 83, 84, 85, 85, 75, 39 (so 1:22,  2:45, 4:08, 5:32, 7:57, 8:22, 9:27, 10:16). After finishing the 3k, Will was talking about how about how he had to run the 4x4, and I kept going off about how I was so happy that I was done for the day, and how being in the long distance crew is so awesome because we don't train for the 400 (and therefore never have to run it, right?). Right after that, Scott calls me over and says: you're running in the 4x4. CRAPPPP. Then I go spy on the coach's meeting to see when Scott's running, because I say I'll only run it if I get to run against Scott. The third leg it is then. I get the baton a few seconds after Scott, catch him 200m in, and pass him! Nothing makes an athlete happier than being able to race with his coach :). Ended up running 60 flat. So slowww. So happy though because we won! With 3:49! Destroyed the sprinting team, even though they had Eric. First meet down! ~9mi total.

Total: 41.2mi.
Mon 1/27: Lower Arroyo. Ran a bit slower than the team with Mark, and later Will when he dropped back to us. 7.8mi.

Tue 1/28: Ladder workout 8, 12, 16, 12, 8. Ran around 2:41, 4:02, 5:25, 3:58, 2:33, pretty happy. Ran with Will/Fabian in the beginning and ran with Jared coming back down. Didn't run the bonus because hamstrings started feeling worse going back down. ~7.5mi.
Fabian hurt his ankle so he's on the bike for a while =/.

Wed 1/29: Tu Madre, 5.6mi.

Thu 1/30: 8 on, 4 off, 6 on, 4 off, 4 on at Lacy. Was a pretty amazing workout, ran around 2:50, 2:40, 2:30 per lap on each. Ended up running with Jared and ahead of Iggy on the last two. 7.5mi.

Fri 1/31: Garfield long way, 5.7mi.

Sat 2/1: 3x1600 going every 9, felt horrible. Ran 5:40, 5:37, 5:39 I think. Saturday mornings just don't work for me... 8mi.

Total: 42.1mi.

Too soon legs, too soon

Mon 1/20: Full Arroyo with Will! 9.8mi. Went pretty slow, ~8min pace (79min total). Pecs still sore.

Tue 1/21: 6x800m every 5 minutes. 2:41, 2:38, 2:38, 2:39, 2:38, 2:37. The groups were Eric and Aditya in front, then Jared and Juan, then Fabian, Will, and me. My laps were all pretty consistent, so can't really complain. Hamstrings extremely sore the moment after the workout finished. Pecs still sore. ~7mi total.

Wed 1/22: Garfield Long Way, 5.7mi. ~7:20 pace again. Pecs and hamstrings still sore. 30 pushups was so much harder than usual o_O.

Thu 1/23: First of Susan's workouts. 1.5mi tempo with 800m at 10k pace, 800m at 5k pace, and then 800m all out, then 800, then 2x400. I wanna say my paces were around 2:55/2:45/2:35, 2:35, 70, 67. Hamstrings still sore. ~8mi total.

Fri 1/24: Crazy tree, 6mi. Went pretty slow by myself in order to preserve hamstrings.

Sat-Sun: Off. I'm kind of concerned that I maybe have strained my hamstrings since they've been sore for so long now. Even if they're not strained, being sore for this long sounds like an easy way to get tendinitis. Maybe I'm being a bit too conservative... Probably biking would've been good but was pretty busy over the weekend with chamber music and Chinese New Year planning.

Total: 36.5mi.

Too cold for ice baths

Mon 1/13: Casting Pond, 8.5mi, ~7:18 pace. Felt pretty hard, but generally satisfied with the outcome. Don't want to feel too sore for tomorrow's workout, so took an ice bath. So cold.

Tue 1/14: 7x400 on the track. Goal was to get ~75s. Ending up doing 74, 73, 72, 72, 73, 72, 73 because didn't want to get dropped. Fabian was really fast, and Will was going out a bit faster but crashed in the end =/. First speed workout, so I'm sure things will get better. ~5.5mi.

Wed 1/15: Huntingson up Los Robles, 6.2mi. Ran really slowly because legs were really sore (especially quads). Ice baths every day.

Thu 1/16: 2mi time trial at Garfield Park, ran 12 flat for 2 laps (2.05mi). Really slow course, felt really good. Pretty much even splits. Ended up gaining a lot on Jared by the end. Started near Fabian and Will and dropped them pretty hard the second lap. I guess I'm a lot more prepared for endurance than speed, which makes sense since the rest of team did the 16 strides work out last Thursday and 200s last Saturday while I was gone (and lazy) during ski trip. ~7mi overall. I'm definitely satisfied with today though, gave me a lot more confidence for this season.
Went to Din Tai Fung today with a bunch of alums after practice! Anton, Stephanie, and Clara all visited! xD xD xD (I know you're reading this Steph! ;P)

Fri 1/17: Can't remember what we ran, but according to Aditya's running calendar, it was 5mi. Awesome.

Sat 1/18: 8:30am practice... 8x200m on the track with 200m jog rest (every 2 min?). Averaged around 32, but everybody else was way faster. Really lacking speed. 20 min warm up and cool down. ~7mi.
Helped Jama move a bunch. Yay arm strength!

Sun 1/19: Off. Three day weekend! Worked at the swim/dive meet, and randomly did 145 push ups... Pecs are really sore now o_O. Also played like... 3 easy songs of DDR.

Total: 39.2mi.
This is my first real high intensity week! The mileage is a bit lower than I would've hoped, but it's better to be on the safe side for now until I'm stronger, especially since something is always sore. And yes, I did ice bath every day from Mon-Fri. Brrrrrr. Missed dinner every day too as a result.

Monday, January 6, 2014

Beginning of the end

Sun 1/5: Had a team meeting, seems like a lot of people are dropping out. =/

Mon 1/6: First day of practice! Casting Pond, much faster than I'm used to (~7:20 pace). 8.5mi. IT band hurting a bit throughout the evening...

Tue 1/7: Rosemead at around 7:20 pace again. 6.7mi. This makes me feel fast.

Wed 1/8: Huntington up Los Robles. 7.3mi. More 7:20 pace, this is pretty ridiculous.
PM: DDR! This new pad rocks! ;P

Thu 1/9: Lacy and back with Eric in the morning, with 3 laps I think. 4.5mi. SKI TRIP!

Fri 1/10: Skied for half a day... hurt my head. Whoops. The snow was so bad...

Sat 1/11: Off.

Sun 1/12: Rosemead again, starting from Page. 6.5mi.

Total: 33.5mi + DDR + half day skiing.
40mi equivalent.
